Afghan bride

“This sobering image, showing a 40-year-old groom sitting beside his 11-year-old future bride in Afghanistan, brought Stephanie Sinclair top honors in the annual Photo of the Year contest sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).”

misc LA thoughts

Posted by greglarson in Los Angeles, news at 11:45 am | Permanent Link

There are surely much, much, much bigger things to worry about in this world however, when I read this LA Times article — I thought “No, tell me it isn’t so…. that some luxury houses might be built close to the Hollywood sign”
Homes could rise on ridge near Hollywood sign

super Tuesday & California

Posted by greglarson in news at 3:49 pm | Permanent Link

I was reading today on CNN regarding the primaries or caucuses that are going on today. It said this about California:
“With so many electoral votes at stake, pundits say the state is crucial to picking either party’s nominee for president.”
Which was no surprise. But then it said something pretty shocking to me: “California’s economy is […]

Evangelicals a Liberal Can Love

Posted by greglarson in news at 5:59 pm | Permanent Link

I don’t agree with everything the guy writes, but I love reading Nicholas Kristof’s stuff on the NY Times.
Here is an article that I especially liked.
The last paragraph was the best:
“Unlike the religious right windbags, she was passionately “pro-life” even for those already born — and brave souls like her are increasingly representative of religious […]

We Who Believe in Democracy

Posted by greglarson in news at 9:08 am | Permanent Link

I dont know why, but for the last couple of years I have been tracking the political, economic and spiritual situation in Zimbabwe very closely. I love foreign policy, and Caleb and I talk about foreign policy a lot - but I am not sure if that is the only reason.
I think it has more […]

Only in Los Angeles

Posted by greglarson in Los Angeles, news at 1:10 pm | Permanent Link

From the LA Times:
“Only in Los Angeles would the news of the murder of a 14 year old girl be relegated to rarely read and seen Homicide Report. In most cities across America this would make Head-Line news, but in the gang capital, bearly a whisper is heard. How has this type of situation come […]

What’s new in LA Times news…

Posted by greglarson in Los Angeles, news at 1:47 pm | Permanent Link

Here is an interesting article on doubt, and pure religion (James 1:26-27)
Doubting God but still doing good — Is it a desire to believe that pushes people like Mother Teresa to help those whom others abandon?
Simply the juxtaposition of the preceding article, next to what I read after that was telling and ironic…

Here is a […]

Open-Arms Conservatism

Great article about the two ways that the ’soul’ of the Republican party can go in the direction of…
Here is an excerpt:
“There are, in fact, two belief systems contending for the soul of the Republican Party, but one is not liberalism. The two intellectually vital movements within the Republican Party today are libertarianism and Roman […]

No Reincarnation without Legal Permission in China

Posted by greglarson in humor, news at 4:05 pm | Permanent Link

This is great. It seems “China’s State Administration of Religious Affairs announced Order No. 5, a law covering “the management measures for the reincarnation of living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism.” This “important move to institutionalize management on reincarnation” basically prohibits Buddhist monks from returning from the dead without government permission…”
