LA news

Posted by greglarson in Church, Los Angeles, quotes at 9:56 am | Permanent Link

We don’t live in south Los Angeles, but every time you drive to LAX, or go past downtown, or take the Metro to Long Beach — you are going through, or close to south-central (even though that is not the politically correct way to call south LA these days).
Anyway, read this article today in […]

voice of the day

“Most churches make the mistake of selecting as leaders the confident, the competent, and the succesful. But what you most need in a leader is someone who has been broken by the knowledge of his or her sin, and even greater knowledge of Jesus’ costly grace.” — Tim Keller

The Smart Shepherd

Posted by greglarson in Church, Los Angeles at 1:10 pm | Permanent Link

Pretty good article on Tim Keller in Newsweek –
The Smart Shepherd. A New York pastor who says he thinks too much wants to bring his Christian message to the world.

A good quote from the article: “Keller is also reaching out to young, urban Christians around the world, offering to help them build churches like his….’It’s […]

Tim Keller & Dostoevsky

Posted by greglarson in Church, quotes, theology at 4:47 pm | Permanent Link

I have a thing for Tim Keller - a pastor from NYC.

He and his ministry challenges and inspires me like no other. I would like our ministry here at Kairos to hopefully (without emulating) — glean the best from what they do and try to put that into practice here in Hollywood.
Anyway, I read today […]

Luther & Rob Bell

Posted by greglarson in Church, quotes, theology at 4:28 pm | Permanent Link

If we believe that what Luther meant for his posting of the 95 theses was just the start, and that he meant for the work of ‘reforming’ the church, was to go on & not stop (semper reformanda, “always reforming”) — then you will enjoy this quote:
“What a lot of people call church in America […]

a prayer for the babies

Posted by greglarson in Church at 7:35 am | Permanent Link

So last night at Kairos, we had our 1st baby dedication since we moved out here a year ago.
A prayer for Lukas, Oliver, Liam, & Lukas - to be prayed over them:
God we pray that they will have your wisdom in their heads,
their eyes will see your glory,
their ears will hear your words,
their mouths will […]

ministering together with my family

Posted by greglarson in Church, Ministry / church related, family at 4:41 pm | Permanent Link

I want to say thanks to the Kairos community. You have welcomed & blessed my family since day one when we arrived here in LA. Thank you. This place & church has allowed our family to minister together in different ways & we are grateful.
- I think of the 16 or so people that we […]

Scientology tent-revival meetings?

Posted by greglarson in Church, Los Angeles, humor at 9:29 pm | Permanent Link

Our church neighbors only 2 blocks down (The ‘church’ of Scientology)

- had all sorts of tents out in their parking lots set up a few days back. I was not sure if they were holding ‘revivals’ down there or not.

If I would have time, I would have wandered down there to check it out.
Who knows, […]

America’s frustration with Christians…

Posted by greglarson in Church, theology at 10:30 am | Permanent Link

Interesting juxtaposition of readings for me here today…
First I read this article: A New Generation Expresses its Skepticism and Frustration with Christianity
Then I read this article about Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa investigating Televangelists’ finances.
They seem to be sadly linked in my opinion.

The need for a missional church…

Posted by greglarson in Church, Ministry / church related, theology at 9:16 am | Permanent Link

People often ask me what we are trying to accomplish out here in LA, and I explain that what we doing is planting neighborhood missional churches in the LA area. That is our goal. Since there is some confusion of what ‘missional’ is, and after explaining it many times I decided to post something […]
