Luther & Rob Bell

If we believe that what Luther meant for his posting of the 95 theses was just the start, and that he meant for the work of ‘reforming’ the church, was to go on & not stop (semper reformanda, “always reforming”) — then you will enjoy this quote:
“What a lot of people call church in America has very little to do with the church Jesus had in mind. I think you just begin by acknowledging that [America’s idea of church] is an absolute, total failure. The whole system that says these few people (I would add - in this specific denomination) are going to heaven and everybody else is going to hell, is deeply flawed and must die. The systems that says big growth and #’s are the goal must also die.”
“The central metaphor Jesus uses is the Eucharist. His body is broken and His blood is poured out to the healing of the world. God is looking for a body of people who will break themselves open and pour themselves out for the healing of the world”
“I think the problem is that when people say ‘churhc’ many mean religious goods and services where you come and there is a nice inspirsing talk, good coffee in the back, snappy music and everything ends up fine. Jesus speaks of his people who are willing to suffer and die so that the world can be healed — that’s an entirely different proposition” –Rob Bell

This sounds a lot like the article/interview I just read not too long ago in Relevant magazine…Rob Bell has become intriguing to me. Not sure if I completely buy into everything he says, but I’ll be reading his books soon (on request from the library) and so hopefully I’ll find out!

Hi Greg,
I have had a few leaders show me Rob Bell’s videos. They are definitely out there but you are right they do make a person think deeper. It’s good to get an update on how things are going. That’s awesome that your son made the JV team for soccer. It sounds like it’s a pretty huge accomplishment. What position does he play?

Chris - nice hearing from you. Bell’s videos are great. I have seen a # of them.
He loves to play center-mid, but the coach puts him at right or left mid sometimes.
hope you & the family are well. Greg
